Suggested rule(s)
- EXW – Ex works. Used when the buyer has its own logistics network and the seller wants to keep its responsibility to a minimum.
- FCA – Free carrier. It is one of the most commonly chosen rules for container and multimodal transport; the exporter keeps responsibility for customs clearance.
- CPT – Carriage paid to. Used for shipments where the seller manages the transport but risk is transferred early.
- CIP – Carriage and insurance paid to. Suitable for valuable cargo when the buyer wants the seller to arrange insurance.
- DAP – Delivered at place. Common for door-to-door shipments where the seller manages transport end to end and import clearance stays with the buyer.
- DPU – Delivered at place unloaded. Suitable for deliveries to terminals, warehouses or project sites where the seller has unloading equipment.
- DDP – Delivered duty paid. Offers the buyer the simplest process; preferred when the seller can manage customs and duties in the destination country.
- FAS – Free alongside ship. Used for bulk and heavy cargo where the buyer manages the vessel charter; for containers, FCA is preferred.
- FOB – Free on board. Common in sea freight where the buyer wants to manage freight under its own agreements.
- CFR – Cost and freight. Used in sea freight where the seller manages freight and insurance is left to the buyer.
- CIF – Cost, insurance and freight. Traditionally common in sea trade with letters of credit; note that the insurance cover is only the minimum.
