Volumetric Weight Calculator
Calculate the chargeable weight easily.
Volumetric weight calculation
Carriers compare the actual (gross) weight of the cargo with its volumetric weight and charge the greater of the two. This is called the chargeable weight.
The calculation uses general industry factors; different factors (e.g. 1 LDM = 1,750 kg) may apply depending on the carrier and contract. Request a quote for the exact price.
Factors
| Mode | The volumetric weight rule |
|---|---|
| Air | Volume (cm³) ÷ 6,000 = kg · about 1 m³ = 167 kg |
| Road (LTL) | About 1 m³ = 333 kg; for loading metres (LDM), usually 1 LDM = 1,750 kg |
| Sea (LCL) | 1 m³ = 1 ton; whichever is greater (W/M) is charged |
Example
A 250 kg pallet measuring 120 × 80 × 100 cm: volume 0.96 m³. By air, the volumetric weight is about 160 kg, so 250 kg (gross) is charged. By road, 0.96 × 333 ≈ 320 kg, so the volumetric weight applies; for light but bulky cargo, volumetric weight comes to the fore.
Frequently asked questions
How is volumetric weight calculated?
The cargo volume (m³) is multiplied by a factor depending on the mode: about 167 kg/m³ by air, about 333 kg/m³ for road LTL, 1000 kg/m³ for sea LCL.
What is chargeable weight?
It is the greater of the actual (gross) weight and the volumetric weight; the carrier charges on this value.
What is LDM?
Loading metre: the length the cargo occupies in the vehicle's load space; it is used in LTL pricing.
